Students in Year 7 have recently taken inspiration from still life paintings by contemporary or historical artists to produce their own pieces. They incorporated collage and used acrylic paint to create some really colourful and beautiful paintings.
The Year 7 class also completed some exceptional lino prints after classroom discussions about the issue of homelessness in Tasmania and what it means to them to have a home and a safe place to live. Students drew images of their houses and used a process of reduction to create editions of brightly coloured oil-based prints. It is a complex and time consuming process, however, the students completed some superb images and were able to master the technique.
These were displayed in Art on Victoria (a new outdoor art gallery curated by the City of Hobart’s Youth Arts and Recreation Centre team) at the rear of Artery on Victoria Street. Copies of the colour reduction lino prints were also installed in display boxes in Wellington Walk (in the Mall).
Art teacher, Miss Alex Pitt, said, “As homelessness is such a pressing issue for many Tasmanians, with more than half of the homeless in Hobart and the South, I felt it was important for the students to be engaging with a real-world problem. Through their art they were able to actively consider the issue and generate awareness and empathy.”
