Debating Week Showcase

23 May 2025

It was a spirited week of arguments, wit, and wordplay! Our students tackled big ideas and bold topics during Debating Week - and didn’t shy away from the challenge. Each lunchtime brought lively discussions, quick thinking, and passionate perspectives:

Monday: Students took on the teachers, arguing that today’s fashion will never match the iconic style of the 1980s. The shoulder pads v minimalist streetwear showdown was on!

Tuesday: Franklin v and Freycinet debated whether life skills like cooking and budgeting should be compulsory in schools - a thought-provoking topic that had the crowd considering what really matters in education.

Wednesday: Fenton and Franklin went head-to-head over pop power, debating whether Taylor Swift has a more powerful cultural impact than Beyoncé, with well-placed lines that had the Swifties in the audience, nodding in agreement.

Thursday: Freycinet and Fenton faced off on whether AI should be embraced as an essential tool in modern education. Thought-provoking and future-focused, with some very clever anecdotes!

Friday: Thank you to the students from The Hutchins School who joined us for the finale, debating Fahan on whether our two schools should merge to become co-educational. A very entertaining and clever debate - and let’s just say, our girls held their ground with confidence and conviction!

Congratulations to all speakers for their courage, confidence, and clever comebacks. Thank you to our adjudicators and staff who made the week such a success. Well done to Audrey Bradford, our Year 12 Spirit Chair, along with the Year 12 students who ran a fantastic week of entertaining debates. We look forward to hearing the final results next week.
