On Monday 29 June, Fahan students joined together to celebrate the importance of buddies for wellbeing. While much of the school day is spent focusing on core competencies such as maths, science and spelling, Fahan students also take the time to recognise the importance of friendship.

During the month of June, school children across Australia celebrated National Buddy Day in support of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation’s Better Buddies Framework, which aims to create friendly and caring school communities, reduce bullying and promote positive relationships.

“Fahan is very proud of its strong connection with the Alannah and Madeline Foundation’s Buddy Program – Better Buddies,” said Principal, Tony Freeman. “We have combined our buddy program, Big Sister Little Sister, seamlessly with Better Buddies.”

“Our program proudly refers to Alannah Mikac’s own words, ‘I am special because I care for others’ which were written for her little sister Madeline.”

Junior School Chair, Erin Giec-Yorston, and her committee organised the activities to celebrate Buddy Day including a picnic style get together on the Boarders’ Flat, where students shared and read their favourite stories, and there was also a special visit from Buddy Bear.

“I always look forward to spending time with my big sister and today was great,” said Matilda.

“I feel proud to be a big sister and seeing the smiles on my little sister’s face when we spend time together,” said Ella.

“I enjoyed listening to my little sister read her story to our family,” said Meghan.

Fahan strives to create an inclusive community in which its girls are prepared to be able to achieve their full potential. The Better Buddy Program and the Big Sister, Little Sister activities support the ongoing efforts of ensuring each student feels safe, nurtured and cared for.
